Balkan PoP Balkan is currently very hip around here and is played very often as tanda or as an entire balkan party. There are lots of beautiful tango- or milong-able non-tangos Bregović "Serbetico" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klAAtuIc5Sc Bregović "Bubamara" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg44qKSbsdQ
I love Goran Bregovic- Maki Maki is one of my favorite alterative songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD2d2FDNGm4 There's at least one song by Balkan Beat Box that I like for dancing also, but I cna't remember it off hand.
is it Meboli (feat. Vlada Tomova) 3:54 Balkan Beat Box I would add Orange Blossom; Desert Dub http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0RSwcn_5n8
I like "Donde Voy", by Tish Hinojosa. It has a lovely melody and heart-breaking lyrics. It's actually a waltz, but too slow to be a vals crusada, so I would dance it as a tango, but still in 3/4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW4MhlnaYQM http://www.mundotish.com/livelyr.html And, based on Bastet's comment, I like the idea of playing alternative tango for cortinas, but playing the entire tune.
we do that for casual milongas. we'll play entire songs of alternative as the cortina or other dance style so people can do a little salsa or cha cha or WCS in between if they feel like it. Another I like but haven't got to try out in a milonga setting is Lisa Ekdahl's "Slow Knowing Smile"
alternatives There are also some lovely movie tracks for romantic tandas, f.i. from "The Postman" (barefooted version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtXowOvD4Qs from "The Piano" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-2lL0QFApk
Kevin Johansen is touring in the UK...but I think he's a one hit wonder myself...... the other stuff on youtube is...not to my taste....
La Valse d'Amelie Yann Tiersen is still a permanent feature of vals or world tandas here. He is currently on tour in Mexico and will visite Hamburg in may. Already bought the tickets. And, I really love the rock version of Amelie !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJifgV5bjZA
Some more ideas: Mad World - Gary Jules NeoVals: Hijo De La Luna - Mecano Valsapena - Cirque Du Soleil (probably trim the intro for length and dancability) Das Gefuhl - Annett Louisan
