    Imperial Swing?

I spent a summer in St. Louis in the 90s, while doing an externship at WashU... and went dancing as much as I could, of course! I was from another midwestern university, and would go to the dance studios with a friend who was from UC Berkeley. Believe me, neither our WCS or ECS looked like...

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

So, we were looking for someone in a vest near the door ;)... for what it's worth, neither of us noticed a guy who appeared "overdressed"! Conclusion: you blended in.

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

I'm rather surprised that there are so many recommendations to ask the ugly women to dance... wow, really??? Yeah, I know that "unattractive" and "less attractive" were the words used, but... really? Are there so many people (men) assessing the *physical attractiveness* of potential followers...

    Unusual Teaching Methods

:p hilarious! Necktie around both ankles to prevent huge steps, balloon or dollar bill between partners in closed position...

    Blues Dance Question

:D That's because we took a bunch of private lessons in blues with him before he moved on from our area ... we think highly of him. I picked Barry Douglas because his teaching is topnotch- different style, different approach, but quality.

    Blues Dance Question

There is a lot of crossover between the lindy dancers and blues dancers. We were surprised by the average age (young!) when we went to some blues workshop weekends. Other videos of some excellent dancers/instructors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNVpNbZrcX8...

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

When is that?! :o See, clueless and socially shunned, Doug, happens to all of us... p.s. Pygmalion, if you are ever looking for that other pennyloafer, I have it... I laughed out loud when I read that comment you made.

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

I'm inviting us along on the next Dance Forum Bay Area dance get-together or ice skating event... just sayin'... would love to meet the locals. I think Zhena would vouch for us, we're nice :)

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

In my spare time, I've done a lot of dog training, with people who are overfaced by and in deep trouble with their dogs. Many of these nice folks are timid or indecisive, and they show it with their slow timing, body posture, indecision, weak voices, lack of praise, etc. I tell people to...

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

Um yeah, so we must be old. And you'll fit right in! I think you said you are 39. Trust me, the Lindy and Blues dancers (not at the Imperial, which doesn't support these dances) would not think you are "young", LOL! They really are young :) . And please don't tell the elementary...

Arthur Murray, Leading, Big Self Questions!

:o Wow! Ok, in the area of this AM studio, there are many independent (non-AM) quality instructors that are $70-90 per private lesson (45 min-1 hr, depending on instructor). I agree with others- broaden your horizon, keep going to other studios and dances.

    Good Enough?

Darn, I was hoping for more interesting conversation last night! We'll take compliments when we can get them, even if they are undeserved... someone thoroughly cussed out my husband during a waltz at the Sunday night dance  even though I immediately apologized to that couple for the...

    Good Enough?

I think you'll be well within range of the abilities of any of the students in this class... everyone has his/her strengths and weaknesses. If it is a bit of a stretch for you, it will still be within reach.

    Good Enough?

It will be much easier to introduce ourselves in a small group, instead of the crowded and busy 2nd Sunday scene! Barring the unexpected, we'll be there on Friday night :)

    Sheet music for developing Choreography?

Danceronice, interesting that you say this. I've actually been looking up sheet music recently to see the general structure, counts and melody. I've been going to WCS workshops, taking private lessons, etc. where now the teaching seems to be "dance creatively to the melody (and everything...

    Good Enough?

I always enjoy reading your posts- your thoughts are wellwritten and expressive, grounded in reality and figuring out the balance of all of life's demands. You might want to try the Friday night ballroom classes (both international latin and standard) at the same studio where your WCS...

Anyone else find that you don't always dance your best with a pro?

L2Dance, I wanted to add, I could almost have written your post word for word! From start to finish, including this part... This musicality thing is driving me crazy. Now I'm supposed to listen to the *lyrics*? And incorporate that into the musicality of WCS? I've been so...

Anyone else find that you don't always dance your best with a pro?

Yeah, I get what you are saying... happens to me all the time, even in private lessons and even after months of private lessons. Part of it is distraction- trying to listen to what is being said. Part of it is trying to fix something that was just corrected and trying to do it right "the...

Is ballroom dancing for senior citizens?

When we were in our 20s, not so very long ago, we used to go to a ballroom in Boston, not far from the airport... where everyone but us must have been in their 70s or 80s. I think it was called the Wonderland Ballroom. Live big band, crowded huge floor. No jeans allowed. It was great fun...
