2011 NDCA Amateur Championships - Provo, Utah

#1
They're just about a week away. Anyone plan on making the trek and dancing at 4,500 feet? Other than the classic USA Dance/NDCA nationals debate, what do you enjoy/dislike about this comp? I'm curious.

It'll be my last time dancing this one- I have a new DP and I'm making the plunge into the professional circuit. I've always loved competing in Provo. There is energy there that I've never seen anywhere else in the US.

Square floor for standard dancers takes some getting used to

Back to Provo... I loved the energy there! Huge venue, you really become the center of attention... and the performances by the Pro couples they invited when I went was fantastic! (They were invited as a special category, not to compete against amateur couples)

Many couples missing?
A few... most of the big names for ballroom will be there...Ronen and Mariam, Igor and Margaretta, Ira and Abby, Igor and Roxanne (I'm super excited to watch them), Tal and Vlada, Yuri and Khrystyne, Pavel and Daniella. There are enough couples to have a first round.

Latin will have five rounds. Valentin and Dariya aren't registered (not like they need to do this comp at all). Andrei and Kate, Ruslan and Valeriya are coming. There is usually a pretty good east/west coast turnout and then BYU or other local students fill in the rest. Either way, five rounds is a lot.

Smooth is missing Nels/Theresa and Roger/Dasha. I think there are about 30 couples for smooth and the organizers are running a quarterfinal. Kyle and Allie Spinder (recently married--congrats to them), Justin David and Marianna, Brock Haymond and Kim Acerson, Andrew Nelson and Jen Gulbrandsen, Jonathan Medlin and Malin Allert will all be there. Smooth is very competitive at BYU-organized competitions.

I'm pretty sure BYU has banned rhythm or something because there are NO open rhythm events this year- only closed syllabus stuff for their own students. Too bad.

This is, of course, not exhaustive.

U.S. National Amateur Smooth Championship:

1. Kyle and Allie Spinder - UT (1111)
2. Brock Haymond and Kim Acerson - UT (3332)
3. Ben Bartholomew and Ana Maria Richards - UT (2424)
4. Alex Taylor and Kaelynne Hill - UT
5. Bradley Gregory and Krista Treu Derington - UT
6. Caleb Merrel and Christina Pendleton - UT

I'll try to post all other U.S. titles later tonight after standard has finished... I missed the Latin Championship last night because DP's neck went out while competing, she hyperventilated on the floor, and we spent the rest of the night with the trainer...

This type of comment comes up quite a bit. I guess sometimes the person posting the results can't be bothered to type both the man's and lady's name. At least they give us the results! However, it might be a little more gracious if only providing one partner's name to give the lady's name : )
